What Actually Happens When You Talk to an Insurance Agent
I understand why you might be hesitant to book an appointment with an insurance agent. That feeling — the one where you're not sure if you're walking into a pressure situation — is completely reasonable. I've felt it myself in other contexts, and I think about it every time someone reaches out to me.
So here's exactly what happens when you contact me. No surprises.
The First Conversation is Just a Conversation
When you reach out — whether by phone, text, or email — we start with a simple conversation. I ask about your situation. You ask about your options. Nobody owes anybody anything at the end of it.
There's no clock running, no quota I'm trying to hit, and no script I'm working from. Most initial conversations take fifteen to thirty minutes. Some are shorter. If you decide at the end of it that you want to think things over, that's completely fine. If you decide you never want to talk to me again, that's fine too.
For Medicare: There’s a Federal Rule That Protects You
If you're approaching Medicare eligibility, there's actually a federal regulation that requires me to get your written consent — called a Scope of Appointment — before I can discuss specific Medicare Advantage or Part D plans. You decide what topics are on the table. I can't just start pitching plans at you.
That rule exists to protect you, not me. I think it's one of the better consumer protections in the insurance industry, honestly.
For ACA Coverage: You’re Already in Control
If you're shopping for health insurance through the Marketplace, you've probably already done some research on your own. Good — that makes the conversation easier. My job is to help you understand what you're actually looking at: why a Silver plan might cost you less overall even if the premium is higher, how tax credits work, and what to watch for in the fine print.
You can compare plans through the tool on this site without ever talking to me. If you want help making sense of what you're seeing, I'm here. If you want to handle it yourself, that works too.
For Life Insurance: No Exam Required to Have a Conversation
Life insurance conversations tend to feel the most personal — and understandably so. You're thinking about your family, your finances, and situations you'd rather not dwell on. I get that.
When we talk about life insurance, we start with what you're trying to accomplish. Are you protecting a mortgage? Covering final expenses? Making sure your family has time to adjust financially if something happens to you? The answers to those questions shape everything else — the type of policy, the coverage amount, and whether the timing even makes sense for your situation right now.
There's no pressure to decide anything on the spot, and no obligation to move forward until you're ready. We go at your pace.
For Supplemental Coverage: It’s Not as Complicated as it Sounds
Supplemental insurance conversations are some of the most important ones we have — and often the most misunderstood. Hospital Indemnity Insurance, for example, doesn't add another copay on top of what you already owe. It pays a cash benefit directly to you when you're hospitalized.
We start by looking at what your current coverage leaves uncovered, and go from there.
Working With Me Costs You Nothing
As an independent agent, I'm compensated by the insurance carriers — not by you. Your premiums are the same whether you work with me or go directly to the carrier. The only difference is that you get someone in your corner who can answer questions, handle paperwork, and be your point of contact if something goes wrong later.
That's the whole arrangement. No hidden fees, no obligation, and no pressure — because my goal is for you to feel confident about your coverage, not just enrolled in something.
If you've made it this far, you already know more about how this process works than most people do before they call. That's the point. The more comfortable you feel coming in, the more useful our conversation can be. Whenever you're ready — whether that's today or six months from now — I'll be here.
