Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 or older. It also covers some younger individuals with certain disabilities and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Also referred to as "Original Medicare", it is generally divided into several parts: Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services; Part B (Medical Insurance) covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
While Original Medicare provides good coverage, it doesn't cover all healthcare costs. Insurance plans offered by private companies, such as Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, and Part D Prescription Drug Coverage are available to help cover out-of-pocket expenses and provide additional benefits not covered by Original Medicare. Medigap (also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance) is extra private insurance you can purchase from private health insurance companies. It works alongside your Original Medicare (Parts A & B) to help cover your out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, ultimately giving you more predictable and manageable healthcare expenses.
Medigap plans are government-standardized into different plan letters (A through N). This means that a Plan G, for example, offers the exact same benefits regardless of which insurance company sells it. This standardization allows you to compare plans primarily based on price and customer service.
Important Notes:
Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage (you'll need a separate Medicare Part D plan for that).
Medigap generally cannot be sold if you have Medicare Advantage (as it's illegal to have both at the same time) or if you have Medicaid (as Medicaid already helps cover many of these gap costs).

Medicare Advantage (MA) Plans, also known as Part C, offer an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. Provided by private health insurance companies, these plans essentially replace Original Medicare (Parts A & B) as your primary source of most Medicare benefits. They combine your Medicare Part A (Hospital) and Part B (Medical) coverage, and most include built-in prescription drug (Part D) coverage, often along with additional benefits that are not included with Original Medicare.
While Medicare Advantage plans typically use provider networks (such as HMO or PPO models, which may require you to use specific doctors and hospitals), and have varying costs like copayments and deductibles, they provide the key financial protection of an annual out-of-pocket maximum. Once you reach this limit, the plan covers 100% of your covered medical expenses for the remainder of the year, offering greater financial predictability. Medicare Part D provides optional prescription drug coverage, offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. It specifically helps cover the costs of most retail prescription medications you pick up at a pharmacy, which generally aren't covered by Original Medicare (Parts A & B).
Each Part D plan has its own formulary (or drug list), which details exactly which drugs are covered and at what cost-sharing tier. Plans also vary in their monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and copayments or coinsurance, so comparing options based on your specific medications is crucial.
You can get Part D coverage in two primary ways:
As a standalone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), which works alongside Original Medicare.
As part of a Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan that includes prescription drug coverage (often called an MA-PD plan).
It's important to enroll in a Part D plan when you are first eligible and don't have other creditable drug coverage, as failing to do so could result in future late enrollment penalties that are typically added to your premium and are permanent.
